There are some people who had a stellar career as professional sports players, and when they retired, they upped the ante and became untouchable in their second career. One of these people is Troy Aikman. The new generation may just know Aikman as one of the best sports journalists in the country; they may not know that he was a thorough professional during his playing days as a former American football quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). Aikman played for Dallas Cowboys and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and the College Football Hall of Fame.

Even though he retired in 2000, he never really stopped following the game, and somehow, he found a way to make a name for himself in the sport, first as a commentator and now as a top broadcaster, some of the biggest sports channels in the country. 

Troy Aikman is a top dog in the sports business. Over the years, the former Dallas Cowboys star has amassed wealth from sports journalism and co-owning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team Hall of Fame Racing. He is also a co-owner of the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball (MLB). Aikman has built a reputation for himself and is highly respected among his colleagues. But, a controversy that will continually trail him is his move from Fox to ESPN. He has stated that he doesn’t know why Fox let him off over the years.

Who is Troy Aikman?

On November 21, 1966, Troy Aikman was born in West Covina, California. There isn’t too much information about his background and how his parents were. But, one thing we know about his parents, as Aikman would later say, is that they were frequent travelers. When Troy was barely 12, his family moved from California to Henryetta in Oklahoma. Here, he had his high school education at Henryetta High School. During high school, his skills as a football and baseball player became visible. He would go on to earn All-State honors.

His talent was so obvious that the New York Mets offered him a contract after high school. He also became the first freshman to start at quarterback for Oklahoma since World War II, when he started in 1984. The following year, he had his first full season as a collegiate starter and helped the Sooners to victories over Minnesota, Kansas State.

The Professional Career of Troy Aikman

With his fame on his special talent spreading like wildfire, he was selected as the overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft by Dallas Cowboys. It would be the journey to his greatness. From his first professional season to when he retired, Aikman was the star athlete of his team. He won many trophies across the board while he was active in sports, making records along the way.

What did Troy Do After Retirement From Professional Football?

Troy Aikman retired from professional football in 2000. In 2001, he got a job with Fox’s NFC telecasts as a color commentator for the season. Noticing his talent and endearment to the fans, the network moved him to the lead announcing team, where he and Joe Buck became buddies. Aikman was so good with the work that he was recognized with an Emmy Award nomination for his works in 2004. That same year, media reports later in 2016 that Aikman was close to signing a contract with the Miami Dolphins. However, the Dolphins dropped the ball at the last minute for reasons best known to them. 

Troy was instrumental in the broadcast of six Super Bowls (XXXIX, XLII, XLV, XLVIII, LI & LIV). Not many broadcast journalists can boast of this range. 

Not only was Aikman a sports journalist, but he was also a radio host. He hosted a weekly sports radio show on Sporting News Radio. Troy has done many works as a sports media personnel, hosting several sports shows, commentating on big sports showdowns, and appearing on several sports shows. He is really a big deal.

As graceful as he was as a sportsman, Aikman was also a graceful man who had a passion for charity. Today, Troy Aikman is the chairman of the Troy Aikman Foundation. It is a charity that was set up to benefit children’s hospitals.

On February 9, 2010, Troy Aikman was announced as a member of the National Football Foundation Board of Directors. This resulted from his excellence in sports, both as a player and as an ex-player. 

Is Troy Aikman An Inductee of the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

Five years after his retirement, Aikman was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor alongside his teammates Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith on September 19, 2005. The following year, Aikman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 5, 2006. On February 7, 2009, Aikman was inducted into the College Hall of Fame at the Notre Dame basketball game.

With his dashing looks and success, he was one of the most attractive men available in his younger days. Aikman has y found love easy so far in his life. He was once in a relationship with Lorrie Morgan. The relationship didn’t fly past the dating stage. On April 8, 2000, he married Rhonda Worthey in Texas. The two had two daughters together. Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t work out as they finalized their divorce on April 12, 2011. Six years later, Aikman announced his relationship with Catherine Mooty on Instagram. Mooty has previously been married to Jerry Mooty. On September 1, 2017, they walked down the aisle in Montecito, California. So far, the couple has remained together. 

Why Did Troy Aikman Move From Fox To ESPN?

After working with the Fox network for almost 21 years, Aikman announced that he had left the network for ESPN. According to him, he didn’t know why he was let off. Finally, however, he got a deal with ESPN alongside Joe Buck on the Monday Night Football broadcasts. He is said to have signed a contract with an annual salary of $17 million.

According to a reliable source, Troy is said to have a net worth of $65 million. This can be attributed to his co-ownership of a NASCAR racing team and his more than 12 seasons playing I’m the NFL.
